Anonymous said: Hey again! I am the one who asked the question about animation at MassArt. I just want to thank you again for replying so thoroughly. It was seriously so nice of you and helped me so much! Also, sorry for replying on anon. I had a tumblr for 6 years but deleted it at the beginning the summer because I was obsessed. I was just wondering what we should bring (or what you would reccomend) to the first day of class for animation.
Here are some shitty sketches!!! these are probably good things to have always anyway though. and i’ll seeee you sooooon anon, see you soon.
Oh man you guys! so happy I funded this KickStarter! just got my massive 490 page book with a special doodle of a wizard and a lizard friend just for me!! also came with some excellent lil prints! pls excuse me while I swoon for days, this book is great. If you are unfamiliar with the work of Mike King make sure to check out his comics, he rules
yeah yeah yeah this is my Official Hiatus Drawing
I’m working on a big commission thing. So i’m going on a hiatus from comics until its done.
Also my scanner is a total jerk, which is an issue because I am trying to do things on paper these days.
Also i’m moving at the end of the month into my first Real Person Apartment. There is a lot going on.
I love you all and feel bad about how much I dropped the ball with this over the summer. once classes start up again, ill be better because ill have a real schedule to stick to. I’ve got Big Plans for this story, dont you worry. I will have the first issue of the story done in time for MICE
If you’re itchin to see something i’ve made with my hands, I did just update my website so you can check that out if you like. it has some fun self portraits among other things.
I make animations too, that’s what I study at school. sometimes poems that i read aloud are involved if you’re into that kind of thing.
Stay safe, friends. If you ever feel like something in your life is causing you a lot of discomfort and confusion just remember that every moment is fleeting and our relationships with ourselves, ideas, others, are constantly changing. Soon things will be different in your brain and your heart and your lungs. Inhale deeply. Fill your chest with fresh start.
(I’m trying to document my work as I do the commission so I might make some progress gifs of that once it’s done, otherwise this all goes for this blog too, on hiatus until done with thing and probably back at school)
I think this is the most accurate self portrait I’ve drawn yet.
I’m real good at those social cues. I’m also gorgeous when I’m sleuthing.
Anonymous said: Thank you so, so much! I really appreciate you answering that question with a lot of detail and going over everything. It helped calmed my omgIhavemyfirstrealanimationclassesinamonth feels. I absolutely adore your animation work and I am so much more excited now. Go MassArt animation!:)
Glad I could be of help!! Feel free to go off anon if you wanna! I’m not scary, just creepy and weird! (so reassuring, i know)
Anonymous said: Hey! I am going into MassArt's animation program in the fall and I was just wondering how it was? I am really nervous about it too because I feel like everyone has amazing work for animation 1 and just wanted what someone who already went through the beginning thought of it.
Hi hi hi! always happy to answer questions about MassArt animation, my one true love! I’m going to say a lot of things…
First of all, welcome to the department! Everyone is really nice, so the only thing you actually should be worried about is being completely surrounded by HUGE NERDS. Huge nerds who make a lot of jokes. Animation is really fun.
I came into the department having already experimented and done some animation in Flash. This was helpful experience to have, but overall didn’t put me at any supreme advantage compared to others in my classes.
I’ll be real with you, your first semester in animation is going to be a lot of work. You will learn to think differently about the way you make work. But at the same time first semester has a fair number of exercises and skill-building assignments because they don’t expect you to really know what you’re doing!
It can be an outlet for making more narrative based work, if that is something you’re interested in. There is more freedom to the assignments but at the same time you have to learn how to write things for a short time-line. Most of the projects I made were 30-45 seconds, so you have to make it a quick narrative if there’s going to be one at all.
Digital toolbox 1
It’s exercises and learning software. In this class (actually in all animation classes) it is important to experiment and try new things. Don’t worry too much if the things you make don’t look awesome, but at the same time push yourself and actually work hard on the assignments. The techniques and software tricks you learn in this class will be vital to making anything at all in future classes, so you have to pay attention.
If you’re still worried about this coming year here’s some general advice about what you can do to make sure you get the most out of everything once classes start:
Do your homework and go to class! It’s the simplest way to succeed in the department. If you think your homework is easy and you aren’t spending very much time on it, SPEND MORE TIME ON IT. People might call you a huge nerd, but you’ll make something cool and it will inspire others to work hard too. You might even win an award, who knows. If you find things are really challenging for you, ask for help! The department is full of kind, silly, and understanding people who just want to see you succeed. As with anything you learn, animation takes time and practice. If you’re willing to put the work in, you will literally see your ideas come to life and that is the most rewarding thing oh man so cool so great animation woooooo
Tldr; animation is a marathon not a sprint. You have to work hard see your ideas come to life, but the MassArt Animation department is supportive and excellent so if you are passionate about learning and making things you are proud of, stick with it and push yourself and you will go far. If you try your best, there is no way you can fail.
If you have anymore questions feel free to ask away! Best of luck (you’re gonna do great) and I will see you in September, friend!
Remember that time we organized and curated an entire animation show in less than a week during the middle of finals? #nosleep4dayz #tbt (I’m the one in the orange blazer)
